QUESTION: Why do you think land acknowledgements are important? What is meant by unceded territory in the above land acknowledgement? In terms of Truth and Reconciliation, we hear the truth about the devastating impacts of settler colonialism; what is meant by reconciliation and why is it important?
EXPLANATION FOR THE LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: Below is a land acknowledgement that is used at Capilano University and takes place at the beginning of courses, meetings, conferences and presentations. The importance of acknowledging Indigenous peoples and their traditional Territory is that acknowledging territory shows recognition of and respect for Indigenous Peoples. It is recognition of their presence both in the past and the present. Recognition and respect are essential elements of establishing healthy, reciprocal relations.
