Guidelines
for Positive Psychology (PSYCH 3312) Extra Credit Paper
There are journal articles posted in Extra Credit section on
Blackboard. You may review any of those articles.
Your summary of each article should include the following
elements:
1.
research
question(s),
2.
hypotheses/predictions
3.
independent
and dependent variables (Explicitly state what the and dependent variables are.
For the independent variables, explicitly state whether they were manipulated
within-subjects, between-subjects, or a combination of the two)
4.
design
5.
results
(DO NOT tell me the specific statistical tests they computed. This not
important for the
summary.), and
6.
implications
(That is, how do their results tie in with the previous literature, and how
does it advance our knowledge of the phenomenon?).
Do not get into the
methods and procedure that are not necessary to understand the main points of
the research you are
describing. For example, the number of participants that were tested, the
number of items that were presented, etc. However, you do need to describe the
task and explicitly mention
the independent and dependent variables. You do not need mention all of the
results. Describe only the most important findings. Also, you do not need to
include the results of the statistical tests (i.e., do not mention the t or F
values, nor the p-values). The
quality of the writing is important. A large portion of your grade on this
assignment will be based on your writing quality which includes clarity, word
choice, succinctness, grammaticality, transitions between paragraphs, and
flow. To learn about elements of good scientific writing style, you should
consult:
Sternberg, R. J. (2003). The
psychologists companion: A guide to scientific writing for students
and
researchers (4th ed.).
New York, NY: Cambridge University Press.
The paper should be written in APA
format. To learn about APA style and the most recent
edition of the APA publication manual, consult: http://www.apastyle.org
and https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_style_introduction.html.
Additionally, an annotated APA-formatted paper is
uploaded on blackboard for you to review. ONE DEVIATION FROM THE APA-STYLE IS
THAT YOU DO NOT NEED TO INCLUDE HEADINGS (E.G., INTRODUCTION, METHOD, RESULTS)
IN YOUR SUMMARY.
Submit your paper assignment on
Blackboard using the TurnitIn link that is found in the same page that you
found this guideline and the list of articles from which you chose to review.
